What is the “Silver Tsunami” and how it will change our lives?

In the last 5 years, the term “Silver Tsunami” has being widely used to describe the next wave of senior citizens ready to retire. By 2025, for the first time in history the number of people over 65 will be bigger than children 5 years old and under. But what does that really mean? How the “boomer” generation will change the health care industry landscape? From the real state market to consumer habits everything will change.

Real Estate

At least, one third of house owners in the U.S. are 60 years old and over. As this part of the population retires, many of them will also put their houses in the market to move in with their families or into retiree communities. It’s estimated that more than 27% of today's owner-occupied homes will become available by 2037. States like Florida and Arizona will see a sharp increase in the next years, for example.

Consumer Habits in Senior Facilities

The “boomer” generation has their own consumer habits and lifestyle, and they are not gonna let that go. This will change the way Home Care facilities operate and cater to this generation. They have different expectations. A big room with board games and Bingo Tuesdays is not enough for them. They want activities, social life and convenience.

Home Health Market

More people than ever will be looking for Senior Care facilities. From Primary Care doctors to Home Health facilities, the market will have to be prepared for a new set of challenges and demands that will come within the next years. Providing more than just a dorm will be imperative for senior home institutions. A seamless experience from doctor visits to medical records will be essential. Technology will play a key part in this transition.
